CHAPTER 13
Ed
âCan you maybe get your elbow out of my fucking face?â
âYouâre lucky you still have a face,â I half snapped, half coughed. âWe all are.â
âSpeaking of elbows and the parts attached to them,â Holly said, âI highly recommend you take your hand off my tits!â
âSorry,â Dave replied, sounding not sorry in the least. âWas just making sure you were okay. I am a doctor after all.â
âFormer doctor,â I corrected, pushing myself to my hands and knees and taking in our surroundings.
Weâd gotten luckier than we had any reason to hope for. Though the cave weâd been in seemed to be all but collapsed, somehow the bit of shelter weâd found had managed to weather the storm with not much more than some minor debris dropping on us.
Better yet, what Iâd thought to be a dead-end alcove was apparently nothing of the sort. The cave in had dislodged a section of wall behind us, beyond which seemed to be another tunnel ... or make that a hallway, as the dust cleared and I was able to see more.
Fuck it. Anything was better than where we were.
âDo you think the others made it?â Dave asked. His voice was calm, but his vitals spoke otherwise. I could hear his heart speeding up, the blood rushing through his veins.
Oh shit. That wasnât good. Maybe I shouldâve grabbed another blood pack or two back at the hotel.
âI said...â
âI fucking heard you,â I replied, trying to push thoughts of his blood away. âI have no clue, nor do I...â Hold on! Maybe I was thinking about this the wrong way.
âYo, Berry Girl,â Dave called out, switching tactics. âHow about you? Maybe you can talk with the dirt like your friend did and find out if...â
âCall me Berry Girl again and youâre going to learn how quickly I can tear yours off.â Holly paused, then cocked her head in the darkness. âBut no. I canât sense my sisters. Thereâs too much shifting debris. Theyâve either been crushed to death, or are too far...â
I ignored the rest, considering what this meant for us, for me. I knew my luck. The chances that Gan had been flattened into a pancake, thus saving all of us from her particular brand of crazy, seemed too good to be true.
That said, she was likely trapped, which wasnât the worst thing in the world. Hell, even if Serena and her friends were there, too, itâs not like they could easily teleport out of this prison. Gan had said so herself. That meant there was a chance.
If I could find my way back to the surface before she did...
But what about Dave?
A part of me wished I was as heartless as most of the vampires Iâd met in the past. If so, it would have been easy as pie to kill the shit out of him and leave it at that. And itâs not like the dipshit didnât deserve it in some small way.
But I wasnât some wanton killer, nor did I care to become one.
